Workbenches, also known as Workshops are stations where the player can upgrade, modify, or repair their weapons. Workbenches are featured in several instalments of the Dead Island series.

Dead Island and Riptide[]

Workbench

One of many workbenches you'll find on your journey.

I can probably put this to good use.
Cliff Calo's thoughts on the workbench

Workbenches appear as a basic workshop table, with a vice on either side and a desk map on it. Some of them also have an interactable radio on them which may or may not play music. There's usually various tools on it, such as a hammer or wrench, but they can't be picked up. Often there is also a shelf above it with various items on it, sometimes mod items such as wire, duct tape or nails. Underneath it is a variety of drawers or storage boxes with various scrap metal or tools but again you can't collect any of them.

Crafting[]

You can create certain weapons at the workbench. These are usually throwables which are single use, but you can create as many as you want providing you have the materials to perform it. Creating them costs cash and the required blueprint must have been found. These items can be bought from merchants or found in containers scattered around the maps. They can also be found on zombies after they've been killed. Weapons you can create include:

Repairing[]

All weapons in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide will degrade from use, except for thrown weapons and Firearms. Using melee weapons in combat results in a loss to its condition. This will continue until the weapon's state is reduced to 'zero', whereupon it will deal greatly reduced damage and any mod effect will not happen. However, this does not mean the weapon is permanently lost and it can be repaired back to 100%. Once fully repaired, it will deal the same damage as before and mod effects will occur on critical strikes. Repairs cost cash, and the worse condition the weapon is it, the more expensive it will be to repair to 100%. Make sure to repair your weapons frequently to save yourself money. Some weapons can't be repaired and once degraded to 100%, they will simply be discarded. These weapons include:

Upgrading and Modding[]

WorkShop

The other main purpose of the workbench is to allow the player to upgrade their weapons up to three times, increasing various (though not all) stats of the weapon. It will not add any effects to the weapon, but as a general rule, upgrading a weapon will increase its damage, force, handling and durability. It should be noted that the better the base attribute is, the greater amount that attribute will increase x 100.

You can also modify your weapon at the workbench using a corresponding blueprint. You will need sufficient cash to both upgrade and mod the weapon, as well as the corrected amount of mod materials to do so. You must have also found the blueprint in order to use it. Modding a weapon will often give it an effect such as fire, bleed or shock. It will also increase the damage further, as well as possibly changing the force, handing or durability of the weapon.

Locations[]

  • All safe houses have at least one somewhere in them.
  • They are also scattered around the maps.
  • Each of the Japanese Bunkers have a workbench in their back rooms.
  • Harlan Johnson's bungalow has a workbench at the rear of it.
  • All of the Gas Stations have a workbench in their corresponding workshops.
  • There's a workbench in the control room of the Pump Station in Moresby.
  • In the Sewers there are various maintenance closets which contain workbenches.
  • Mowen's Boat has one, and can be seen as a 'mobile workbench' of sorts.

Escape Dead Island[]

In Escape Dead Island, unlike the last games like Dead Island: Riptide, it can't be used like it did in the first game. It is instead used to find new weapons to use. You can't repair or mod weapons in Escape Dead Island so the workbench is pretty superfluous to the game. Taking a picture of the workbench with the Camera gives Snapshot 29.

Dead Island 2[]

DI2 workbench

The Workbench returns in Dead Island 2 with the same features as the previous main games, being repairing and modding of weapons. However, weapons can no longer be upgraded. Instead, weapons can accept Perks. They can also be used to raise a weapon's level to the Slayers current level, ensuring that no weapon needs to be sold or scrapped due to being under levelled, and thus worthless to carry or use.

Scrapping[]

Weapons can be scrapped in the inventory, however they can also be scrapped at a workbench. Instead of being sold for cash, weapons can be scrapped to get a small amount of mod parts. Depending on the weapon rarity, they will give out different amounts and types of mod parts. This is an alternative to selling if the Slayer is either low on mod parts or has no need for more cash.

Applying Perks[]

Various weapon Perks can be added to weapons, which further augment their designs. Much like weapon mods, perks add or enhance an existing property of the weapon at the expense of a different stat, such as increasing base damage but lowing durability, or increasing swing speed at the expense of weapon force.

Weapon Leveling[]

The final thing that can be done at the workbench is level up a weapon to match the Slayers current level. Levelling requires no mod parts but it does require a lot of cash, far more than either adding perks or mods to a weapon. Depending on the weapons rarity and current level compared to the Slayers, the amount needed to level match the Slayer can be as low as a few thousand to over ten thousand cash to level match. However, level matching ensures that a favourite weapon will never have to be sold or stored due to being underpowered, as instead it can just be level matched to the Slayer, bringing it back in line for killing zombies. Weapon levelling also does not remove any applied mods or perks.
