Mods are used to upgrade weapons in Dead Island. There are multiple blueprints throughout the game which the player can obtain to modify existing weapons to increase stats and add effects. There are also blueprints existing to allow the Hero to make grenades, molotovs, and ammunition.
Ammunition in Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptide, and Dead Island 2 consists of different types of bullets to be fired from Firearms. Ammunition is rarely found in the environment due to the focus on melee combat. Nevertheless, ammunition can be obtained when looting enemies, containers, or other locations. it can also be crafted at a Workbench provided the player has the relevant blueprint.
Eventually, the Heroes can acquire blueprint Mods or "recipes" to manufacture each type of ammunition at a Workbench, provided that the hero has the requisite materials and cash. The pistol and shotgun ammo recipes can be found in the MoresbyPolice Station on the third floor during the Act II, and the rifle ammo recipe can be obtained as a quest reward during the Act III.
I would like to share the knowledge I gained years ago and that unfortunately may have vital application under the current circumstances. The notes you will find below will allow you to crate rifle rounds. I'm aware that you probably won't find much of it on the island but still...
Manufacture your own shotgun ammo using the guidelines I provide. It's simple, and under the current circumstances, undoubtedly necessary.
In Dead Island, the blueprint is found in upper floor of the Police Station in what appears to be the Records room, on top of a shelf in the middle of the room. In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is located in the armoury of the Henderson Military Base that opens up after contacting Frank Serpo during the main quest Militarized Zone. The armoury only opens up after completing this part of the quest.
Special ammo is a different type of ammo introduced in Dead Island: Riptide for the new firearms added to the game. The ammo can't be crafted and is rare to find in the world. Instead, it is most commonly available from various merchants who will sell the different ammo types. Unlike regular ammo, special ammo encompasses all firearms that aren't usual bullet firearms, so special ammo is found under a different tab in the inventory screen and can sometimes be collected and reused if kept track of after firing.
Within the game files of Riptide, a unique ammo type can be found specifically for Sniper Rifles, and named Sniper Ammo. As the name suggests, this ammo would have been used for the Sniper Rifles in the game, because it was cut and the snipers were decided to just use Rifle Ammo instead.
Notes
Quite often some ammo can be looted from human opponents, as well as found in certain locations throughout the game, possibly along with the corresponding weapon.
Punks in Moresby who have guns on them do not always drop ammo. It is however most likely that they will drop their current weapon instead.
The metal scraps and the bleach needed for crafting the pistol ammo can be bought from the various traders in the game, as well as be found as loot.
When you drop a firearm, the ammo will be added to your inventory. If there is more ammo in the gun than you can carry, the extra ammo will be left in the gun. In the Xbox version, if you equip a gun, selecting it in the weapons wheel and then dropping it (with the weapons wheel still up) it is possible to get more ammo than the weapon was loaded with. The firearm will then show -1, if 16 rounds were taken from a fully loaded 15 round pistol. If this is done a few times again after the ammo is taken, the gun will disappear.
Ammo boxes lying on the ground have a price on them when viewed while having full ammo. I.e. Pistol ammo is worth $75, but since the item does not appear in the inventory, it cannot be sold. This may show that at one point in the game development it was possible to pick them up and use, sell, or trade them later as there is also a "ammo" option in the trading selection screen with "melee", "firearms", "consumables", etc.
Carrying fully loaded weapons is good way to have extra ammo. (e.g. looting couple of punks for their pistols with 15 bullets in each) Those extra weapons can be thrown away when ammo is needed or other good loot is found.

Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2 features five different ammunition types in the base game, each available for the respective weapon type. Ammuntion can be purchased from traders or fabricated at Workbenches once the associated blueprint has been obtained.
Throwables, also known as Projectiles, are weapons featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. As the name suggests, they are weapons that can be thrown and have a variety of effects. Throwables can be found in the environment, purchased from a merchant, or crafted at a Workbench if the player has obtained the relevant blueprint. Selecting a throwable will take up a weapon slot.
"Combine together a couple of deodorants in the way I described and you will have in your hands a homemade bomb. Just make sure man that the deodorant bottles are not empty!"
Here's an easy recipe for a simple incendiary device. A bottle of booze and a rag are all you need to turn any enemy from rare to well-done. Easy as pie as long as you don’t accidentally barbecue yourself.
"Would you like to have the possibility to knock down several guys at a time, without much effort, and more importantly, without using your fists? Man do I have something especially for you — a recipe for a homemade stun bomb! See the details below."
In Dead Island, the mod is found in Arena B of the Bloodbath Arena DLC. After entering the arena, go down the stairs straight ahead on the left side, then turn around and enter the tunnel in front of you. The mod will be in the middle of that tunnel, between two Explosive Barrels. In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is found in Henderson in a small square just south from the Quarantine Zone, up a ladder to a balcony.
In a domestic environment I devised a recipe for a simple but at the same time deadly dangerous bomb that while exploding showers everyone around with a rain of makeshift metal bullets. Everything can be done in one's own garage or workshop. Watch out for shrapnel!
Found in the Resort map, on the beach, beside a lawn chair, half way between the two entrances to the Diamond Bungalows. It is north of the stage, near a wrecked lifeguard truck, beside a freestanding wooden wall.
"I prepared a relatively easy-to-construct bomb that spreads a poisonous substance, that will bring upon the unlucky affected a literal puke fest. Just remember not to stand windward when using it!"
in Dead Island, the mod is found in Arena C of the Bloodbath Arena DLC. By following the main road there's a small shack on the right with a small boat inside it. The blueprint is on a metal shelf to the right of the boat. In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is found in the Japanese Tunnels on the lower levels.
"Read carefully through the instructions below and then try to recreate in practice the device it describes. You will be dealing with electricity so remain extremely cautious while working on this. The effect of your effort should come as a bomb of specific type whose effectiveness will be striking… literally and figuratively speaking."
The mod is found in Arena D of the Bloodbath Arena DLC, inside the large wooden hut, on a mattress on the floor to the left.
"Okay, now I know this sounds disgusting, but hear me out. A jar filled with flesh can be used to bait the walking dead. Throw it hard and when it shatters the undead will gather around it like vultures over a rotting carcass."
Released to PlayStation Home users who participated in the Dead Island pre release event "Zombie Survivor game". Also can be found in a number of locations around the resort. The meat attracts zombies when thrown, moments before exploding. In the Definitive Edition or Game of the Year Edition of Dead Island, the mod is automatically placed in the player's inventory. In Dead Island: Riptide, it can be found in Henderson, under a bridge behinds some crates.
According to my observations the brain of those ubiquitous damned still remain active, although in quite a peculiar way. One can take advantage of this by adjusting their brain wave frequencies using my invention. The effect? You'll see for yourself. I promise it will be... explosive
In Dead Island, the mod was cut from the final game making it unobtainable by normal means. In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is found in the square across from the Old Town Cinema in Henderson, where the concert stage is set up. The mod is found behind the stage on a table where a Metal chest is also found below.
A knife you can throw and an explosive to attach to it is really the only thing you need to make a sticky-grenade. Make a couple of these toys following the instructions; just remember to aim well.
"Below I described a way to turn a knife into an electric grenade. You throw this contraption at the walking dead, the blade plunges into the rotting meat, and at the same time releases an electric charge which will strike anyone around the hit son a bitch. I should get a Noble prize for this invention."
When entering Bloodbath Arena's Arena A go to the leftmost area of the map, passing the work bench. The mod blueprint is on the floor behind a rock pillar. This mod was introduced in Dead Island's Patch 1.3.1.
