An example of ammunition, being Shotgun Ammo

Ammunition in Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptide, and Dead Island 2 consists of different types of bullets to be fired from Firearms. Ammunition is rarely found in the environment due to the focus on melee combat. Nevertheless, ammunition can be obtained when looting enemies, containers, or other locations. it can also be crafted at a Workbench provided the player has the relevant blueprint.

Dead Island and Riptide[]

Types[]

Ammunition must fit the firearm in order to fire.

Blueprints[]

Eventually, the Heroes can acquire blueprint Mods or "recipes" to manufacture each type of ammunition at a Workbench, provided that the hero has the requisite materials and cash. The pistol and shotgun ammo recipes can be found in the Moresby Police Station on the third floor during the Act II, and the rifle ammo recipe can be obtained as a quest reward during the Act III.

Below I wrote down a relatively easy way to create pistol ammo. It really requires little effort and the effect is more than worth it.
In Dead Island, the blueprint is located in the cells control room of the Police Station, on a table next to the Workbench
In Dead Island: Riptide, the blueprint is location at the Pinai Ferry Station inside a wrecked car, next to the warehouse that Jayden is located inside.

I would like to share the knowledge I gained years ago and that unfortunately may have vital application under the current circumstances. The notes you will find below will allow you to crate rifle rounds. I'm aware that you probably won't find much of it on the island but still...
In Dead Island, the mod is given by Claire at the Overpass Camp as a reward for completing her side quest Little Prince.
In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is on a table in the comms centre of the Henderson Military Base, the room where the radio is located that allows you to contact Frank Serpo at the end of the main quest Militarized Zone.

Manufacture your own shotgun ammo using the guidelines I provide. It's simple, and under the current circumstances, undoubtedly necessary.
In Dead Island, the blueprint is found in upper floor of the Police Station in what appears to be the Records room, on top of a shelf in the middle of the room.
In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is located in the armoury of the Henderson Military Base that opens up after contacting Frank Serpo during the main quest Militarized Zone. The armoury only opens up after completing this part of the quest.

Special Ammo[]

Special ammo is a different type of ammo introduced in Dead Island: Riptide for the new firearms added to the game. The ammo can't be crafted and is rare to find in the world. Instead, it is most commonly available from various merchants who will sell the different ammo types. Unlike regular ammo, special ammo encompasses all firearms that aren't usual bullet firearms, so special ammo is found under a different tab in the inventory screen and can sometimes be collected and reused if kept track of after firing.

Cut Ammo[]

Within the game files of Riptide, a unique ammo type can be found specifically for Sniper Rifles, and named Sniper Ammo. As the name suggests, this ammo would have been used for the Sniper Rifles in the game, because it was cut and the snipers were decided to just use Rifle Ammo instead.

Notes[]

  • Quite often some ammo can be looted from human opponents, as well as found in certain locations throughout the game, possibly along with the corresponding weapon.
  • Punks in Moresby who have guns on them do not always drop ammo. It is however most likely that they will drop their current weapon instead.
  • The metal scraps and the bleach needed for crafting the pistol ammo can be bought from the various traders in the game, as well as be found as loot.
  • When you drop a firearm, the ammo will be added to your inventory. If there is more ammo in the gun than you can carry, the extra ammo will be left in the gun. In the Xbox version, if you equip a gun, selecting it in the weapons wheel and then dropping it (with the weapons wheel still up) it is possible to get more ammo than the weapon was loaded with. The firearm will then show -1, if 16 rounds were taken from a fully loaded 15 round pistol. If this is done a few times again after the ammo is taken, the gun will disappear.
  • Ammo boxes lying on the ground have a price on them when viewed while having full ammo. I.e. Pistol ammo is worth $75, but since the item does not appear in the inventory, it cannot be sold. This may show that at one point in the game development it was possible to pick them up and use, sell, or trade them later as there is also a "ammo" option in the trading selection screen with "melee", "firearms", "consumables", etc.
  • Carrying fully loaded weapons is good way to have extra ammo. (e.g. looting couple of punks for their pistols with 15 bullets in each) Those extra weapons can be thrown away when ammo is needed or other good loot is found.

Dead Island 2[]

Dead Island 2 features five different ammunition types in the base game, each available for the respective weapon type. Ammuntion can be purchased from traders or fabricated at Workbenches once the associated blueprint has been obtained.
