Palanai Island is the primary location featured in Dead Island: Riptide. This tropical island is located in the Banoi Archipelago, being the second largest island after Banoi. Unfortunately, it has been hit by the same zombie outbreak that consumed Banoi and the rest of the archipelago. The virus was intentionally released on Palanai by Frank Serpo as a bio-weapons test to record the results of the new mutated strain of Kuru.

Palanai, like Banoi, is covered in dense, lush tropical forests. Mostly untouched by western and outsider influence until around the 1800s, when the capital of Henderson was founded by settlers. The little town grew to be a busy trading port, with a peninsula fort to guard the harbour which was used in at least one major battle. The town is modelled after a Mediterranean town, with a similar sort of layout and architecture, enclosed streets and limited vehicle access. The jungles often flood, leading to many of the buildings built there being built on wooden stilts to avoid it. Many of the villages in the jungle have various duckboards to get around when the dirt paths turn into mud trails from the rain or when the waterways flood and take over. There was also an attempt by Christian missionaries to convert the island population to Christianity, but it failed.
During WWII , the Japanese occupied many islands in the Pacific as they island hopped over to their primary objective of Australia . The Banoi Archipelago was one of the many places the Japanese occupied during the war and as such many remnants of their occupation can be found here, like on Banoi. However, to them, Banoi was seen as the front line island against any sort of allied invasion. Palanai was the supply hub, with a vast tunnel system built across the island for use as a supply base and for other such needs. A large radar network was established under the island, to try and intercept allied transmissions.

Trivia[]
- It is unknown as to whether or not it was nuked, but as the heroes left the island, the last of the survivor outposts were seen being overrun by Walkers and a Ram.
