The Katana is a sharp weapon featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. It can be given out as a Quest reward, sold by various Merchants, found on killed Zombies/in Metal chests or found in select places in the world.
Overview[]
The Katana is a very powerful but brittle sharp weapon. It deals high damage and has above average force for a sharp weapon but has low to average durability. Due to being a two handed weapon, it has a long reach and can hit unarmed enemies, like most of the zombies, outside their attack range, something useful to Xian Mei especially. The Katana is a powerful weapon, and a useful tool in the arsenal of any of the heroes, even blunt weapon focussed ones like Sam B, though the big drawback of the Katana and other swords in the game, is their poor durability and high repair cost. A fully upgraded, modified Katana can easily cost several thousand to repair from even modest damage, leading to them being 'emergency' weapons that are only used in dire situation, when the ability to quickly dispatch zombies is of the upmost importance.

- A Katana can be given out as a quest reward from a couple of quests:
- The side quest Deus ex Machina in Dead Island gives the Hero a Katana as a reward.
- The main quest Rescue in Dead Island: Riptide has a purple 'very rare' rarity katana as a reward
- Different merchants sometimes sell a Katana on the later stages of the game.
- Dwight Turner at the Overpass Camp can sell a Katana after completing his side quest Visit to the Pub.
- Michael Stick in the Mingende Jungle can sell Katanas.
- Likewise, Sebastian Black can also sell a Katana.
- Jeremy in the Prison Canteen can sell Katanas.
- Alex in Henderson and Zoey will sell Katanas in their inventory in Dead Island: Riptide.
- A side mission in Act IV in the Prison leads to acquiring the legendary katana, Zed's Demise.
- Xian Mei will wield a modded Katana after completing the final level of her Team Quest Upping the Odds for Xian.
- One Uncommon and one Common Katana are located on a display rack inside Stan's House, located in Henderson in Dead Island: Riptide. The location is unlocked by accepting the quest ER.
- Unlike the Wakizashi and Eviscerator, two very similar sword weapons, this sword is a two-handed weapon.

- The katana is the only weapon to appear in every Dead Island game.
