Chaos Overture is the prologue quest in Dead Island. This quest can only be played in single player.

Synopsis[]

After waking up the day after Sam B's party, the Hotel is mysteriously deserted. Find out what's happened.

Walkthrough[]

  • After starting the game, you'll have a short cutscene where the Hero wakes up in their room, the day after the big party in the Hotel. Upon getting up from the bed, you'll get full control of the Hero. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the controls. Learn how the Hero moves, how the camera controls, what menu buttons do what and how the UI is laid out.
  • There's not much for you in the room, so open the door and head out to the corridor.
  • Make your way down the corridor, following the minimap if you get lost. There's a lot of luggage bags in the hallway, on various luggage racks. Loot them all as you go through. They'll give out cash and mod items, which'll be useful later on in the game when you start to acquire weapon mods for the various weapons in the game.
  • Head down the corridor until your way is blocked by a couple of luggage carts. You'll need to bypass these, so look to the left to find an open door. Go through and loot the room, then head to the door at the back.
  • The next few rooms are dark, so turn on your flashlight to see. This is a useful tool that you'll see a lot of use of in the game to come, so explore the rooms and their adjoining bathrooms bathroom a little so you can get used to only having the flashlight to see.
  • This door is closed, however, with this one you can break down the door to force and entry. This is something you'll need to do over the course of the game, so get a feel for it now. Look at the door and press the button prompt to start an entry attempt. You're aiming to hit the red bar in the centre to force through in one, but there's no penalty for missing it, other than spending a bit more time battering it down.
  • With the door broken open, you're through to another room. As before, loot all the containers you can find, then progress through the open door to the corridor on the other side of the blockage.
  • Go the rest of the way down the corridor to reach a wide, open area where the stairs are located. Follow the minimap route to a double doorway and try the emergency stairway.
  • To no-ones surprise, it's jammed up tight, blocked from the other side. Continue down the hallway to the balcony to try the elevator.
  • Once you reach the balcony area, a short cutscene will play. It shows the Hero you selected slowly walking out to the balcony edge to gaze at the beauty of Banoi. However, their view is cut short when a screaming, bleeding man suddenly tumbles past them, shortly followed by a woman. The Hero is naturally shocked and backs away. After a short black fade, you'll regain control back on the balcony.
  • Before heading to the elevator, which is located in one of the corners, loot the luggage for more goodies, then get into the elevator shaft.
  • It doesn't look safe, but it's your only option for escaping the Hotel. Look down to find the access hatch and open it with the button prompt. Now drop down into the elevator cart.
  • Once in, another cutscene will play. Again, to no-one's surprise, the elevator screeches to a start before violently and rapidly descending, throwing the Hero around as it flashes down floors towards a lower floor. Suddenly, it comes to a stop, in full view of a balcony. Two figures are on it, hunched over like animals. They see you and sprint at the open elevator. Before they can reach it, the elevator descends again a floor before mercifully lodging itself stuck again.
  • You regain control in the dark elevator. The... people, can be heard above you, screeching and panting as they try and get into the elevator. Before you can make your next move, you hear a voice over the speakers who explains that they can see you through the elevator camera. After making sure you're feeling alright, he tells you that he can get you out but you'll need to follow exactly what they say. They tell you to search for a weapon in the maintenance room at the end of the next corridor, and to move quickly, though he doesn't explicitly say why.
  • The elevator doors will ding open, but the elevator is lodged between floors, so you'll need to crouch to get out. You'll be on another balcony, but this one's in a far worse state. There's blood on the carpets and all over the floor. Make sure to loot the luggage before moving down the wide open corridor.
  • Make a right at the end of it to go down a Hotel corridor. Ignore the bloody bodies against the wall. I'm sure they're just sleeping off that party from last night!
  • Proceed down the corridor, looting what you can.
  • You can't get too far, however, as you'll see a whole group of people at the far end. They're not best pleased to see you, however, and The Voice exclaims that they're the infected. He doesn't tell you what they're infected with, but he does tell you to run.
  • This is good advice, so turn around and sprint. The other door is now open, so run through it and KEEP ON RUNNING!
  • There's some open doorways as you run past, but ignore them and run for the open storage room door. If you've not stopped the entire time, you should make it just in time.
  • Just before you reach the room, you'll be stopped and a cutscene will play. It'll show the Hero running for the door with the people just behind them, hot on their heels. The Hero makes it just in time and slams the door behind them. However, it's out of the frying pan and into the fire, as they're not alone. There's something else with them and it smacks the Hero square on their face, knocking them to the floor as well as knocking them out. The screen then fades to black, end the quest and leading directly into the next one.

Notes[]

  • There's a medium medkit in the bathroom of your Hotel room you wake up in.
  • You can find the room where the Mother and Father were in for the Dead Island cinematic trailer. After coming out of your room, instead of going down the corridor you can go through the open door next to you and you'll find the dead Mother and Father. The fire axe from the trailer is mysteriously absent, however, though in some cases it is on the floor but unobtainable.
  • Fighting the Infected with bare hands in the final part of the quest is considered almost impossible due to their high-level (about level 50). This probably the reason why the game prompts the player to run away instead of fighting.
  • After completing Chaos Overture, if the player begins a new game they are given the option to skip this quest and progress to the quest Passport to Life at the Beach House, beginning Act I.
  • There are also Walkers (who are also lv 50<) in the hall leading to the elevator when you are prompted to run from the Infected.

Level up Trick[]

  • There's a way to Level up a couple of times in a Prologue. Instead of running to the end, run into the open bedroom door instead, which a Walker will be blocking the way. Punch it away, and get on the bed. The three high-levelled Infected will follow you into the room, but they'll be unable to reach you. Then, inch closer to the infected (but not too close) while crouching, and start punching away, back away to regain some stamina. Rinse and repeat. You'll reach Level 4-5 before the first Chapter. It's possible to do it as many times if desired.
    • This was later patched which makes the amount of XP gained by killing the Infected far less than it was pre-patch. After reaching around player level 18, the XP given reduces, making it a poor way of levelling up past level 30.

Trivia[]

  • "Chaos Overture" is a song by Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy.
  • In the hotel room where the Mother and Father can be found, one may notice that there are no holes in the window in which the infected Daughter falls through during the Dead Island trailer.
