The Grenade is a projectile weapon featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. It is a common type of fragmentation hand grenade (a.k.a. frag grenade) which can cause serious injuries or damage to multiple objects within their blast radius, with an additional damage-over-time effect due to high heat or fire caused by the burning chemicals that are spilled around by the fragmentation.
Overview[]
After being thrown, the grenade has a timer of several seconds before it explodes, dealing massive damage at its epicentre with this diminishing as you move further away. The damage is capable of killing Walkers instantaneously and dealing massive damage to harder enemies like Thugs or Wrestlers. After exploding, the grenade also deals residual fire damage to anything hit by it, which will likely finish off any enemy not directly killed by the blast. However, the grenade is not recommended for use against any sort of fast moving enemy like the Butcher, Infected or even Screamers, as they will likely be able to run away from the blast, causing it to deal very little or even no damage depending on how far away they are.
Notes[]
- Grenades can be purchased off of several merchants, and like the incendiary grenade, cannot be made by the player:
- Cahaya Dian in Moresby can sell grenades.
- Keenan Fisher in the River Village can sell a grenade after getting his stock back at the end of the main Quest Chasing Shadows.
- Zoey in Riptide can sell grenades after completing a level or two of her Team Quest Best Merchandise for Zoey.
- Wayne in Riptide can sell grenades only after completing the final level of his team quest Best Merchandise for Wayne, something which is impossible on the first playthrough.
- Colonel Samuel Hardy in Riptide will reward increasing numbers of grenades for completing each level of his team quest Upping the Odds for Colonel Hardy.
- Several grenades can be found lying around in the world, and will respawn after reloading the game, allowing for farming:
- A grenade can be found on the floor of the upper walkway overlooking the courtyard in the Town Hall after the supermarket has been cleared. As such collecting the grenade, leaving, and returning repeatedly (so the area resets) can provide an infinite supply of grenades. Using it on the Ram below where the grenade is located is an effective way to instantly kill the Ram.
- Three grenades are found on the dock just before fighting Afran, alongside a Medkit.
- In Riptide, a total of 4 grenades can be found on the roof of the Old Town Cinema after completing the main quest Evacuation.
- In Riptide, the supply drops checked during the side quest Proximity will sometimes contain grenades.
- Various grenades are found in Ryder White's Campaign:
- At the first military drop in Queenscliffe during the first quest The Eagle Has Landed, two grenades can be found.
- Two more grenades can be found in the fortification at Victory Hill during the quest Stolen Thunder.
- Just as you're entering Quarantine you drop down onto a box van. This box van has a Pistol and grenade on it.
- Whilst defending the roof of the Moresby Gas Station at the end of the quest Escape from Banoi, many grenades can be found on the roof.
- After entering the Prison, shortly after starting the quest Get the Power Back On, there are military crates which contain grenades.
- A grenade can be found just after first fighting the Rebels during the quest Medicine for Emily. Going down the staircase after fighting them has a Walker and a grenade.
- A single grenade can be found on an upper walkway of the Prison Showers during the quest Clear the Path.
- Many grenades can be found in the armory at Cell Block C when you go there during the quest It's a Trap.
- One grenade is found during the final quest Evacuate from the Prison.
- The grenade will explode several seconds after thrown.
- The player can hold the grenade as long as they want after priming it; it will never blow up in their hands.
- The damage radius of the grenade may be small but the knock back radius is quite large.
- The damage the grenades deal is quite high, though it can depend on the proximity to the explosion. It can deal up to 6000+ damage if the target is right on top of it. It also deals very high fire damage if an enemy is out of the immediate blast zone.
- A player can accidentally set off a grenade by hitting it with a melee weapon regardless if its not picked up.
- It is not recommended to use the grenade on Butchers unless planning on running right up to them immediately after it has gone off. This is due to the Butcher's healing ability which will regenerate its health after the explosion, making it a waste of a grenade use.
Bugs[]
- When a grenade is thrown from the top to the bottom of a ladder and the player doesn't move back, the blast may kill them.
Trivia[]
- The Grenade is modelled after the US-issued Mk II "Pineapple" Hand Grenade, so named due to its shape and structure.
