Oceanic Flight 1012 is a passenger airliner featured in Dead Island that crashed on the island of Banoi.

The aircraft is first encountered as the Heroes clear out the Lifeguard Tower during the main quest Exodus. After opening the garage to the Lifeguard Tower and being introduced to the Thug, there's a radio sitting on top of the workbench at the back of the garage. Before the heroes open the hatch up to the roof, a mayday call can be heard on repeat being broadcast from the radio. It can't be turned off, but will stop after the roof hatch is opened. The message explains that both engines are out and that the pilot will make a crash landing north of Moresby in the Mingende Jungle. Upon reaching the roof of the Lifeguard Tower and looking up, the aircraft can be seen passing low overhead, onto its final destination in the jungle.

Many people across the island saw the aircraft going down. This includes the people in the Lighthouse, amongst them Monica Goldberg. She was apparently in contact with the pilots before the plane crashed, and she's desperate for someone to find the crash site and see if anyone survived. She also hopes that the plane will be salvageable and be able to fly, so it can take everyone at the Lighthouse off the island, though that's very fanciful thinking.

After this, the plane is largely forgotten about until the heroes actually enter the jungle during Act III. The jungle is dense and the crash site is largely covered in foliage, but a group of Jungle Muggers have invaded the site and are using it as a base. There are no survivors and the aircraft has broken up into 6 distinct pieces, these being the nose, 2 fuselage pieces, the tail section, the left wing and the right wing.

Flight 1012 emergency message

Mayday! Mayday! This is Oceanic Flight 1012… All engines are out! Ground control, do you read? We're making an emergency landing north of the city, in the jungle! To all stations, I repeat…

Overlooking the crash site from the hill

The plane is found in the Jungle, halfway between Gaia Falls and the River Village. You can tell where it is by a wrecked pickup and a Jungle Mugger smoking next to it. If you kill the mugger, you can peek over the hill and see the wreck of the aircraft.

Layout[]

The area it landed in is quite big, with a wide clearing area likely partly flattened by the aircraft. This can be easily inferred by the large tree trucks which are broken down and scattered across the crash site, likely smashed by the aircraft impacting the treeline. There's a steep, rocky slope leading to the first open area. Here there are some cars, likely from the muggers, as well as some shipping containers and suitcases. The area is covered in muggers who mostly carry pistols, although some of them carry rifles, making it a hazardous place to explore if low levelled or without a firearm of your own.

The cockpit is unreachable, although the fuselage is accessible through two points. There's a container acting as a ramp up to the cabin area filled with rows of seating. Oxygen masks dangle forlornly from the ceiling while the force of the crash has caused the fuselage to rip into two and deform in most sections, making it tough to traverse. Below it is the cargo area, now on the ground floor. This is where all the shipping containers come from, as they would be used to carry goods, mail and cargo on the aircraft. Indeed, there's still a few containers left in the hold. It's easier to traverse, but the maze of walls make it easy for muggers to ambush you.

Making it through to the rear, you can find the tail section caught up on a large tree stump and held by more trunks, one of which acts as a ramp to reach the open door high off the ground. There's more cars and a shipping container here. The fuselage can be bypassed on the left hand side, which also gives access to one of the wings, although it's pointless to go up it as there's nothing to find.

Related quests[]

  • Nighthawk - Given by Monica Goldberg in the Lighthouse. She asks the heroes to investigate the wreck and see if there are any survivors. She also ambitiously asks if they can check if the aircraft is intact so they can use it to fly away from the island.
  • Fallen Angel - Given by Chris in the Overpass Camp. He asks the heroes to retrieve some electronic parts from the crashed plane so he can repurpose them to try and contact the outside world.

Notes[]

  • The crash site contains a large number of duffle bags that can be looted for mod parts and small amounts of cash.
  • There's also several metal chests at the crash site.
  • ID Card #67 can be found in the main fuselage of the plane, on a seat in the seating area of the fuselage.
  • If you linger for too long at the crash site after killing all the jungle muggers, they will respawn. However, this can be a good way to get more ammo or rifles to sell for a decent amount of cash.
  • However, if you reload the game after clearing out the site, the muggers will not be present and zombies will be in their place.
  • Even though you get the quest from Monica in Act I, you can't complete it until the jungle is unlocked in Act III, so the quest will remain in the log for some time.

Trivia[]

  • Several movies and T.V. shows including Lost, Alias, Chuck and Executive Decision have used the Oceanic Airways name.
  • The plane crash was originally going to be where the game began. The player would take on the role of Mike Jennings, who was looking for his wife after they crashed on the island. However, this plot-line was scrapped later in development.
  • Oceanic Flight 1012 should be the last flight onto the island since it is stated that all flights in and out have been cancelled in order to quarantine the island.
  • It is implied that Oceanic Flight 1012 was from Australia, despite entering from the South of the island.
  • In the Definitive Edition, the crash site does not show up on the map.
  • It’s not known what caused the aircraft to crash, as it's never explained and neither engine is shown to be on fire when it passes overhead of the Lifeguard Tower.
  • It would be expected to find a lot of bodies at the crash site, given the size of the plane. However, somewhat alarmingly, there are none, other than a few unrecognizable bodies left on the ground. However, given the presence of the jungle muggers at the crash, it's likely that the bodies were removed and dumped, while any survivors were either killed or sent off to fend for themselves.
