Fatshark is a Swedish video game developer based in Stockholm, Sweden and responsible for the development of Escape Dead Island.[1][2] They announced the game on July 1st 2014, releasing it 5 months later in mid-November, November 18th 2014 in North America, November 21st in Europe and 28th November in Australasia. The game was met with mixed reviews and as such remains the only Dead Island game developed by the company.

Overview[]

The company was founded in 2008 in Stockholm, Sweden close to the Southern Station, which is where their headquarters are located. It originated from a company called Northplay. Fatshark (Northplay at the time) acted as a subcontractor for several AAA titles for consoles and PC, and the studio also develops its own games. Prior to Escape Dead Island, the company produced a variety of different genres, mostly for the PC, but experienced the most success with hack and slash games, their only games to get above a 'mixed' or 'average' reviews, specifically the game War of the Roses. After Escape flopped, Fatshark continued to develop games, more recently their Warhammer Vermintide series which has consistently received good reviews.

Trivia[]

  • Fatshark is referenced in Escape Dead Island through one of the snapshots, snapshot 45, which is the snapshot of the shark hanging at the Beach Bar with the snapshot description 'Wish this shark was... fatter', referencing the company's name.
  • It also has another reference in the DLC for Escape Dead Island, the Underwater Labs. Towards the end of the DLC, there's a keypad on a wall with several large windows looking at a tank of water. By pressing the button, a fat shark with very close similarities to the company's logo, will swim up to the window and bash against it, before swimming away again.
