Dead Island Wiki

Bernard Grinn is the high commanding official of the Australian Defence Forces (ADF) at the time of the outbreak. Although he is never seen in person, he is mentioned at the end of Dead Island in the closing dialogue as well as in the opening cutscene of Ryder White's Campaign.

While Bernard is never directly shown throughout the series, he is mentioned a couple of times, once during Ryder White's Campaign and the other in the closing cutscene of Dead Island, as being the commanding official of the ADF. We can assume from this that he is a middle aged man, possibly heading towards retirement, as he's likely served with the ADF for many years and is very good at his job. Being the high commander of the forces, he likely is aware of exactly what's happening on Banoi and has a direct say on what happens to the island. He's likely been in the army for many years so knows what he's doing and how to set about doing it, hence the strategic demolition of the City Bridge in Moresby and the destruction of the Jungle Overpass to try and cut off the spread of the infection.

It's unknown whether he is aware of the outbreak purposefully being released on the archipelago or whether he truly believes that the outbreak was a freak, extreme virus outbreak.

Trivia[]

  • He is one of only three soldiers we never see in game in some capacity, the others being McLean from the Bloodbath Arena DLC and the other being Hardy's friend Commander Briggs from Dead Island: Riptide.
  • It is possible that Bernard Grinn is the "General B" mentioned in the secret files from Dead Island: Riptide. The files detail that General B was initially complying with the Consortium's orders to have his military forces stand down on the island of Palanai and allow for one of the organization's "tests" (intentionally orchestrating the kuru outbreaks) to proceed uninterrupted. It is revealed that General B eventually refused to cooperate, resulting in the Consortium to order the deaths of the military forces stationed at the Henderson fort.
