The axe is a sharp melee weapon in Dead Island that causes heavy cutting damage to anything that stands in its way.

OverviewEdit

The two-handed axe is very effective at dismembering zombies and has a long reach. However, it has quite a high stamina cost and reset time. When swinging the two handed axe, the character's vision follows the axe, making it difficult to see. Make your swings count; do not swing aimlessly. The two handed axe special knockdown attack is a thrust attack, which has great range and damage, fast, does not hinder visibility and knocks down enemies (this can only be done by Xian Mei).

The one handed axe (Hatchet, Splitting Axe, Universal Axe) has good damage, but shorter range, faster attack speed, and does not have the visibility problem like its two handed counterpart. The one handed axe special knockdown attack is the same as most weapons (a backhand).

Xian Mei can only perform the knockdown attack with the axe when the Blade Master skill in her Combat Tree is upgraded.
There is an Achievement/Trophy for killing a Butcher with any axe called "Ah! Spoiled meat!".

TriviaEdit

An axe can be found in one of the rooms near where the Hero wakes up during the quest "Chaos Overture", though it can't be picked up. One could assume that this axe was the one used by the Father in the trailer.
